The Benefits of Seeing a Therapist Intern

Before becoming a licensed therapist, almost every state requires that therapists gain experience in the field. Because of this, many therapy practices in Chicago (and all over the country) have an intern building up their knowledge, caseload, and experience - and eager to work with you and your family. Although interns are ready to support you, families often want to know, “Can an intern support us?” So, we’re here to tell you more about the benefits of working with a therapist intern.

Smaller Caseloads

Interns often see fewer clients - and that’s great news for you! Interns have the ability to dedicate more time and energy to each client/family… and they spend more hours per week planning for your sessions, responding to your inquiries, and staying up to date on research. A smaller caseload also allows interns to have more space in their schedule to engage in supervision/consultation with other clinicians… Intern or not, you want your therapist to engage in regular supervision/consultation! Supervision/consultation enhances a therapist’s reflective capacity and problem-solving skills.

You Get A Team

When you work with an intern, you’re working with a team of therapists! Interns are closely supervised by other licensed therapists. Interns bring the wisdom of these experienced therapists directly into your sessions. Interns at Mind Chicago have two clinical supervisors and participate in weekly group consultation, all of which include or are led by fully licensed therapists with years and years of experience!

Energy & Excitement

Interns have worked long and hard to be in a position to support clients and families. All that effort fuels passion and excitement like no other! This can be especially beneficial when working with kids, as interns bring so much enthusiasm, energy, and humor to the table.

Fresh Take

Interns are still completing their graduate or doctoral degrees, so they are learning the most up-to-date, research-supported strategies to help families. Interns spend their time outside of the therapy office learning how to be justice-oriented, affirming, and responsive therapists. They are also immersed in evidence-based approaches for supporting families. Best of all, interns are honing their advocacy skills to be excellent community partners for families.

Affordability

Seeing an intern often means lower costs for families. Interns will likely see you at a significantly reduced rate… so you get all the above benefits right in your budget!
